Even though SuSE Linux ships with a vast array of application packages, many popular ones are missing or have not been included yet. Other packages are included, but may have been updated by their upstream developers in the meanwhile.
In the past, SuSE did not provide a continiously updated package repository like Red Hat's Raw Hide or Debian's Unstable distribution - only a few selected projects (e.g. Mozilla, GNOME or KDE) were updated in between distribution releases.
I, like many others (see links below), build new or rebuild existing packages for the SUSE Linux distribution. You can get them from here:
I've recently started to use the SUSE Build Service to maintain and publish my packages. Starting with the RPMs for SUSE Linux 10.1, they are now maintained in my repository there. See the OpenSUSE Wiki for how to add this repository to your YaST installation sources.
However, the previous ones will stay around and many of the packages for the older SuSE Linux versions might also work on more recent ones. Your mileage may vary.
Some other sources of 3rd-party packages for SuSE Linux can be found here:
If you don't want to install packages manually, you can also try Smart, apt4rpm or fou4s as alternative package installation and update tools.
